The story…

Harry Gerstner had been working as a craftsman for while when he realized he could use a good machinist’s chest on the job. He was a creative, skilled craftsman, and the chest he came up with was different than anything else around. So naturally, a friend asked for one. Someone saw that and asked for their own too, and as word traveled, a plan materialized. Harry opened his own shop, H. Gerstner & Sons, back in 1906.

What a thrill to be here, crafting beautiful, top-quality wooden chests in the same workshop in the heart of Dayton Ohio, a whole 115 years later.

To celebrate this milestone anniversary, we’ve designed a commemorative stamp. This will go in the inside base of our 2021 chests. Great news for collectors—you can get a special anniversary edition of the Gerstner chest with proof printed right inside.

The process…

We have begun stamping our chests, and we will have it noted on each product page when an anniversary edition is available. We started with the J1001 Just Right Box and the J1407 Cooper’s Legacy jewelry box—just in time for an extra-special Valentine’s Day present. Keep an eye on our social media, or emails if you’re on the lookout for a specific box.

The stamp…

Our Head of Marketing, Paul Burgess, worked up the stamp design. It was important to him to get the dates in there, so it’ll still be easy for collectors to identify as an anniversary edition years down the line. You can also spot the logo, Craftsmanship Lives, which sums up the excitement over this milestone anniversary nicely. As for the style of the stamp, he was inspired by artistic movements around the early 1900s when Gerstner was getting started.
