This box was made after 1960, the question I have is what would be the original finish. Someone has put a coat of varnish everything. Did this start out as an oil finish?
Gerstner, nor any other manufacturer I know of, never used an “oil” finish on any of their boxes. They used shellac or another varnish-like finish, which did not stand up to the machine shop environment very well. I only use polyurethane today due to its long lasting appearance.
Terry thank You for the response I stripped off all that was there and now staining than Polly. Starting to go back to together. May need some pointers to do that.
