I just ordered a base for my 2007 Chest. It seemed like a good time to order it. I hope it will arrive in the next st few weeks.May 3, 2020 at 12:16 am #35087alinc100-d22Member
Well I finally got through some things on the honeydo list and was able to blow the dust off this Union Chest from nearly 2 years ago https://www.gerstnerforum.com/showthread.php?1452-New-Old-Union
I’ve got most of it stripped, had to disassemble the door panel and fix a crack in the raised panel. The hardware is soaking. I hope to sand and try my hand at oxalic acid/wood bleach tomorrow. I ended up cleaning the drawers with a Stanley #66 Hand beader. With the right sized cutter it reshapes/re-forms that tiny bead on the bottom of the drawers. If the weather holds up I may get an opportunity to get this one back together before I head back to work on Thursday. Yeah, the Jennings was beyond economic repair, and the seller was a flake! I sent it back to her as she requested, but now she hasn’t paid the return shipping charges as she had promised.
In the meantime, I have kept busy with other projects rolling in. I have restored 2 unknown chests, 2 Union B-20’s, and have a Gerstner O41B and a Craftsman in progress.May 13, 2020 at 12:45 am #35099
I ended up sending it back at her insistence, now she is balking at paying the return shipping she proposed to pay. What a witch! She’s blowing up the Ebay email tool and she makes no sense.May 13, 2020 at 2:50 pm #35100
I have put the Jennings box out of my mind and have been laboring on restoring a Craftsman tool chest, made by Union.May 21, 2020 at 6:32 pm #35114slim-jerkinsMember
Just finished this old Union: https://www.gerstnerforum.com/showthread.php?1706-Another-New-Old-Union&p=9194#post9194
Now back to work on the blue dentist case.June 8, 2020 at 2:00 am #35154
I have been frustrated for days due to the rainy weather here in the “Sunshine State”. I have a Gerstner mahogany 41B That I got the first couple of coats of polyurethane on, but had to bring it back into the shop because of the rain. it’s been two days and it is just not drying or curing.
I read up on the subject and found that UV light cures the finish. I’ve seen that on How It’s Made also. That aligns with my experience. When the box and components spend time out in the sunshine, the finish sets up really quickly. I keep an eye on the UV index on Accuweather to gauge the best time to put the parts out.
I’m hoping for better weather (UV wise) tomorrow. I’d like to finish this box before we head up to Connecticut for the summer. I have projects lined up to keep me busy up there. I shipped one up already. It’s a Union Birch D-17:

I pulled an O41C I bought at an atique mall in PA about 5 years ago out of my storage area and decided to refurbish it. It now sits in my office at work.
Just purchased an O52 online, waiting for delivery, looking forward to what looks to be a pretty thorough restoration.November 10, 2020 at 8:01 am #35944zok14Participant
Just received my O52, based on what I have read and what I see, looks to be 40’s or 50’s. Has fleur-de-lis style bottom corners. All hardware very rusted, doubt there is any plating left under rust. I do not think I want to go through hassle of trying to learn and then replate. I would prefer to have the hardware nice and bright as if new. I find those available from Gerstner as replacements don’t quite line up with mounting holes. all are just a bit off.
Need to decide if going to sand and buff as best as possible and reinstall or going to replace with newer available by filling and redrilling some holes to make the new fit.
I am planning to thoroughly strip the wood to bare, and restain, I think I want a little more color rather than just straight golden oak color. Haven’t decided on the what to use yet. I will try to add some pictures a bit later.
