Description

The standard-bearer of Machinist Chests

This chest is quite possibly the most recognizable design in the Gerstner line, ever since it was introduced in the 1930s. It has grown in popularity for its mobile, versatile style. If your business or hobby takes many of your best tools out of your workshop, trust them to the Journeyman Chest.

We’ve optimized the design over the years, creating a more efficient way to transport numerous, delicate and weighty collections. It is taller and deeper than previous designs, providing tons of storage. And since all of those extra tools will be heavier, two side handles help you carry this chest. The top compartment and all ten drawers are felt lined to provide extra protection for your possessions. The front panel is fitted with a sliding hinge so that it may be stowed beneath the bottom drawer. In the closed position, the front panel covers the drawers and can be locked to provide total security.

One of the most iconic features is the center drawer, originally designed to hold a Machinist’s Handbook is also handy for things like storing a drill index, or your wallet/keys while you work.

I bought a Gerstner box exactly like this one for my fathers birthday in 1962. Dad used it in the shop working as a machinist and tool maker for many years after that. When Dad passed he left the box to me and it is sitting in my basement workshop filled with the same mic’s and machinist tools he used for so long.
I recently cleaned the box out and polished the wooden exterior, it looks as good today as when I bought it 53 years ago. I went on and finished my machine tool career as a journey man machinist and used this box after Dad retired. It has had a lot of use. Gerstner is top notch, the best in the shop.
