Understanding Your Gerstner Chest

How can I identify my Gerstner chest?

The Gerstner Toolbox Identifier can help match your chest to known models using features such as drawer layout, size, hardware, and construction details.

Can Gerstner identify my chest?

In many cases, yes. Photos of the chest, interior labels, hardware, lock, drawer layout, and other identifying details can often help determine the model and approximate production era.

Because some Gerstner models remained in production for many decades, exact manufacturing dates are not always possible to determine.

What is the handwritten number inside my chest?

Handwritten numbers or markings are often box numbers assigned to each box. The number was used to track the different parts of the box (top, front door, and drawers) in production, to know what box they belonged to. The numbers were not tracked or recorded to determine the exact date a chest was manufactured.

How much is my older Gerstner chest worth?

Value depends on model, age, condition, originality, rarity, finish, hardware, and market demand. Gerstner does not provide formal appraisals, but photos and details may help our team offer general guidance about identification or restoration options.

What is the Gerstner Owners Club?

The Gerstner Owners Club is a community for Gerstner owners that includes special benefits, updates, and access to owner-focused information and opportunities.

Why do my drawers feel tighter during certain seasons?

Gerstner chests are made from natural wood. Wood can expand and contract slightly as temperature and humidity change, which may affect drawer fit or movement.

How can I keep drawers operating smoothly?

A small amount of wax or paraffin can be applied to the outside of the drawer sides and drawer slide grooves to help support smooth drawer operation.

How should I protect my chest for long-term use?

Keep the chest in a stable indoor environment, avoid extended exposure to direct sunlight, use protective pads beneath objects, and consider a Gerstner deluxe cover to help protect
the exterior from dust and debris.
