Our Legacy of Craftsmanship

Founded in 1906 by Harry Gerstner in Dayton, Ohio, H. Gerstner & Sons has been a beacon of quality craftsmanship for nearly 120 years. Starting with a $100 bonus earned from his woodworking apprenticeship, Harry Gerstner set out to create tool chests that embodied his philosophy: “A place for everything and everything in its place.” This principle continues to guide our work today, ensuring that every chest and case we produce is both functional and enduring.

A Family Tradition

While Harry Gerstner never had sons, naming the company H. Gerstner & Sons was a nod to his father, Herman, who introduced him to woodworking, and a hopeful vision for future generations. The company remains family-owned, with descendants like John A. Campbell, Harold Leland, and John “Jack” Campbell carrying forward Harry’s commitment to excellence.

Unmatched Quality and Durability

At H. Gerstner & Sons, quality is our cornerstone. Our tool chests, crafted from carefully selected hardwoods like American Cherry, Walnut, and Quarter-sawn Oak, provide a moisture-free environment to protect precision tools. Designed for journeymen, hobbyists, and collectors, our products are built to last generations, often retaining or exceeding their original value. From the iconic front-closing lid to the Stop-Trac system preventing drawer spillage, every detail reflects our dedication to functionality and craftsmanship.

More Than Just Tool Chests

While we are renowned for our tool chests, our offerings extend far beyond. Gerstner chests and cases serve hobbies like fly-tying stations, range boxes, art supplies, and horologist; collectables like family heirlooms, jewelry, and needlepoint, showcasing their versatility. A natural expansion of their woodworking skills includes industrial workbenches and butcherblock tops. We also now offer custom solid-wood furniture and architectural elements, including dining tables, benches, and epoxy “river” designs, all crafted with the same heirloom quality.
