Our Story: Over a Century of Crafting Excellence
Since 1906, H. Gerstner & Sons has handcrafted premium wooden chests in Dayton, Ohio, embodying American craftsmanship. Founder Harry Gerstner sparked a legacy with a bold vision: design a chest where every tool finds its perfect place. This simple idea ignited a tradition of quality and precision that thrives today.
Harry honed his craft under his father Herman’s guidance, building his first chest in the evenings. When fellow craftsmen praised his innovative design, Harry invested a modest apprenticeship bonus to launch H. Gerstner & Sons—a name synonymous with enduring quality.
Resilience Through Challenges
In 1913, the Great Dayton Flood devastated the company’s records. Undeterred, Harry rebuilt with determination, establishing a new factory that remains a cornerstone of our story. Through world wars, economic upheavals, and shifting industries, Gerstner adapts while upholding uncompromising quality. Every chest reflects the meticulous attention to detail that defined Harry’s original creation.
Four Generations of Visionary Leadership
For over a century, Gerstner has thrived as a family-led business. From Harry’s pioneering vision to the leadership of John A. Campbell, Harold Leland, John H. Campbell, and John S. Campbell, each generation has championed craftsmanship while introducing innovative products to meet modern needs. Their leadership ensures Gerstner’s legacy evolves without losing its roots.
Beyond the Machinist’s Chest
While our story began with the iconic machinist’s chest, Gerstner’s craftsmanship now spans jewelry chests, fly-tying cases, humidors, travel bars, and fine furniture. We craft each piece from premium hardwoods—cherry, walnut, and oak—ensuring durability and timeless beauty. Collectors, hobbyists, and professionals worldwide, including aviation pioneer Orville Wright, trust Gerstner for products that blend functionality with pride.
A Lasting Legacy
Today, H. Gerstner & Sons stands as the last American maker of original wooden machinist chests from the early 20th century. Our chests are more than storage—they embody heritage, craftsmanship, and enduring design. With over 100 years of history, we continue to build for future generations, honoring our past while embracing the future.
